When To Book Your Sailing Holiday in Greece

— and why it matters more than you might think

By Walter Kruk, Greek Island Yacht Holiday

Every year, sometime around February, my inbox fills up with the same message. Someone has been researching the best time to sail Greece since last summer. They’ve finally decided. They want June — the best month, the one we always recommend. And they want us.

More often than not, June and September are already gone.

If you’re wondering about the best time to sail Greece, I don’t say this to create pressure. I say it because it’s simply true — and because honest advice is what we’re here for.

The Greek Sailing Season — What We Actually Tell Our Guests

After twenty years sailing these waters, I’ve learned that Greece is not one destination. It’s five or six entirely different sailing experiences depending on where you go and when. Here’s the honest guide we share with every guest before they book:

June and September — The Best Time To Sail Greece

If you ask Alexandra and me when we love sailing most, the answer is always June and September. Especially in the Cyclades.

In June, Meltemi — the strong northerly wind that defines the Aegean summer — has not yet fully established itself. The anchorages are quiet, the light is extraordinary (longest days), and the islands feel like they are yours. In September the summer crowds have gone, the sea is at its warmest all year, the tavernas are relaxed, and the sailing conditions are perfect. The Cyclades in September is one of the most beautiful sailing experiences Greece has to offer.

These are the weeks that go first. Often by January for the following summer.

May and October — Earlier and Later Than You Think

May and October can be wonderful — but not everywhere. In the Ionian and Sporades, particularly, May is often too early and October too late. The weather is unpredictable, the winds can be unsettled, it can be wet (rainy), and the experience is not what most guests are hoping for. If you have your heart set on the Ionian, June through September is your window (maybe you want to avoid August if you can).

July and August — It Depends Entirely on Where You Sail

This period is where honest advice matters most — because July and August in Greece can be magnificent or miserable depending entirely on your destination. Not all the guests ask us about the best time to sail Greece when July or August is their only option. Our question for July and August: Where do you want to go?

The Cyclades in July and August — the Meltemi blows hard and consistently through these months. Beautiful to look at from shore. Challenging and sometimes frustrating (even dangerous) on a yacht. We advise most guests — especially first-time sailors — to choose a different month or a different destination for these weeks.

The Ionian in August — busy. The popular anchorages and harbours fill quickly, the tavernas are crowded, and the magic of finding a quiet corner of Greece becomes harder. Not impossible — but harder.

The Sporades in August — similar story to the Ionian. The islands are beautiful but busy. If August is your only option and the Sporades is your dream, we’ll make it work — but we’ll be honest with you about what to expect.

The Dodecanese in July and August — this is our answer when guests are fixed on a summer holiday and want the best possible experience. Rhodes, Symi, Kos, Patmos — the Dodecanese sits further east and south, largely sheltered from the worst of the Meltemi. The sailing is reliable, the islands are stunning, and the crowds, while present, are more manageable. If you’re sailing in July or August, head to the Dodecanese.

The Argo-Saronic islands in July and August — the islands closest to Athens — offer a different kind of sailing experience. Hydra, Spetses, Poros, and Aegina — charming, accessible, and beautiful. In July and August, they are busy — but pleasantly so. A good choice if you’re combining your sailing holiday with time in Athens before or after.

Why Booking Early Matters For Us Specifically

Greek Island Yacht Holiday is not a large fleet operation. We are Walter and Alexandra — and when you sail with us directly, you are booking specific people, not just a yacht category.

Walter’s and Alexandra’s personal availability as skipper and hostess/cook is limited to a fixed number of weeks per season. Alexandra’s planning and concierge involvement begins the moment you book — hotel recommendations, provisioning preferences, restaurant suggestions, and transfers. The earlier you contact us, the more time she has to make your trip exactly right.

When our own calendar is full, we extend to our carefully selected network of professional skippers and fully crewed yachts — vessels and crew we know personally and trust completely. But even within that network, the best yachts and the best skippers are booked months in advance.

How Far Ahead Should You Book?

As a general guide:

  • June — contact us by December at the latest, ideally the previous autumn
  • September — contact us by February
  • July and August — contact us by December
  • May and October — more flexibility, but discuss your destination with us first

Still not sure about the best time to sail Greece for your specific trip? Just write to us.

If you have a specific date in mind — a milestone birthday, an anniversary, a family reunion — contact us as early as possible. We will always tell you honestly what’s available and what we recommend.
